Contemporary Islamic Architecture Field Trip

In a collaborative effort between MSA University and the American University in Cairo (AUC), a remarkable field trip was conducted on the 6th of May, as an integral component of the course of 'Contemporary Islamic Architecture,' under the instruction of Dr. Doaa Esmat.

The architecture students enrolled in this course had a remarkable opportunity to explore and identify one of Egypt's most outstanding contemporary Islamic case studies, the Campus of the American University in New Cairo. Furthermore, they were accompanied by Eng. Nour Abdelhalim and Eng. Amar Abdelhalim, the son and daughter of the prestigious architect, Abdelhalim Ibrahim, who acted as the co-prime architect leading the international design teams.

Gratitude is extended to Dr. Amal Hamdy, an assistant professor in the architecture department at AUC, who guided the students throughout the campus with a passionate and intensive explanation of all the buildings and outdoor spaces. Acknowledgment is also due to Prof. Ahmed Sherif, who collaborated with Dr. Doaa to facilitate the visit.

During the tour, students had the opportunity to observe and discuss the design of various buildings and landscape designs, in addition to identifying the designers' approaches to applying contemporary Islamic design. They were able to closely observe the design attributes, gain a sense of the spaces and feel the human scale, and take a deeper look into the details that they had not previously perceived merely by viewing photos of the AUC Campus during the lecture.

They gained a comprehensive understanding of how designers think to create different contemporary images in Islamic architecture that remain in harmony and homogeneity. Undoubtedly, the experiences gained throughout the day were priceless.
