MSA Architecture Students Research the Existence and Future of the Mediterranean at The Mittelmeerland Workshop in Alexandria

MSA Architecture department participated in the Mittelmeerland workshop organized by the University AA Visiting School in Alexandria. There were eight MSA undergraduates and graduate students participating under the supervision of Arch.Heba Hussein who had given an open lecture about her research study in the fabulous, diverse structure of the Mediterranean region.

Mittelmeerland is investigating the future of the Mediterranean. Over three years the intention was to research six different Mediterranean cities. Alexandria is the fifth city they visit after Dubrovnik, Tangier, Beirut and Algiers, Istanbul will follow. The students were working with groups from AUC University, Delta University as well Fine Arts faculty. The groups were targeting to study the dynamic territory of Alexandria’s coastline and the mutual dependencies of land and water as Alexandria port is one of oldest ports in the world. The study was on five areas along the coastline, analyzing existing conditions and future projections by playfully utilizing small-scale phenomena, translating found conditions into large-scale urban interventions and envisioning future changes. The team will produce architectural portraits, urban biographies, video narrations and imaginative collages, which ultimately will feature in a printed publication of the workshop’s research on various waterfront cities around the Mediterranean. A good job was done all round by all participating MSAians; students, graduates and staff, and we wish you the best of luck in your upcoming workshop in Italy. As always, MSA shows its academic prowess as it continues to participate in a magnitude of events and workshops, nationally and internationally, in all fields of study as well as extra-curricular activities.
