LECTURE BY OPERATION MANAGER OF METALAB & A FIELD TRIP TO METALAB DIAGNOSTICS

The biotechnology industrial projects students had the privilege of attending a lecture by Mr. Mohamed Hussien Essawy the operation manager of Metalab diagnostics laboratories, the purpose of the lecture was to help the students with finding ideas for their industrial project proposal and to provide them with more prospects about tests made in laboratories and how many machines can help them in identifying the presence of diseases or abnormalities in samples obtained from patients.

Mr. Mohamed initiated the lecture by informing the students about the types of tests which are usually made in diagnostic labs to detect diseases and abnormalities such as blood count tests, glucose level tests and viral tests, and that Metalab is equipped with so much advanced equipment which are not used in most of the diagnostic labs in Egypt. The focus of the lecture was to enlighten the students about the speed and accuracy of the automated equipment used in providing efficient test results, the machines used in each test are so fast that they provide results within a range of minutes to hours unlike other primitive equipment used in other labs which could take days to provide results. The tests are also made for individuals applying for jobs at Metalab to ensure that they do not carry any diseases which could affect the samples and hence the results of the tests. Afterwards, the students went on a field trip to the institute (Metalab) where they were exposed to demonstrations of the performance capabilities of the machines as well as their functions and how they can help in identifying abnormalities. The personnel continued by informing the students that most of the machines were of the Roche diagnostics brand which are known for their high-end performance capabilities and speed in providing test results, the students were shown how each part of every machine in the lab contributes in the testing process and the purpose of each machine where some machines were used for blood tests while others were used in glucose level identification. An actual test was also made during the trip where a blood sample was taken from a student and then the personnel used several equipment in order to identify the levels of certain markers inside the blood in order to detect the red blood cell count within the sampleز
