Academic Warning & Probation

Students are issued warnings if they do not maintain a CGPA of equivalent to C-. Initially the student is notified by the faculty or academic advisor that he/she has fallen under probation and is required to improve his/her CGPA. Students are kept on probation if they do not clear their CGPA deficiency and achieve at least C- CGPA within 4 semesters. Students are issued a dismissal notification form at the end of their third semester.

Academic Integrity & Plagiarism

MSA students are expected to be honest in their academic endeavors. To falsify the results of one's research, to steal the words or ideas of another, to cheat on an examination, or to allow another to commit an act of academic dishonesty corrupts the basis of the academic process.

Such cases are dealt with very severely. The minimum penalty for such cases is failing the module where this offence was committed. In some cases, the penalty may reach dismissal from the University for one semester or more, based on the circumstances of the case. Plagiarism is the inclusion of someone else's words, ideas or data as one's own work.

When a student submits work for credit that includes the words, ideas or data of others, the source of that information must be acknowledged through complete, accurate, and specific references and, if verbatim statements are included, through quotation marks as well. By placing his/her name on work submitted for credit, the student certifies the originality of all work not otherwise identified by appropriate acknowledgements. Plagiarism covers unpublished as well as published sources.

Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, the following cases:

  • Quoting another person's actual words, complete sentences or paragraphs, or entire piece of written work without acknowledgement of the source.
  • Using another person's ideas, opinions, or theory even if    it is completely paraphrased in one's own words, without
    acknowledgement of the source .
  • Borrowing facts, statistics or other illustrative materials  that are not clearly common information without   acknowledgement of the source .
  • Copying another student's essay test answers.
  • Copying, or allowing another student to copy, a computer file that contains another student's assignment, and submitting it, in part or in its entirety, asone's own.
  • Working together on an assignment, sharing the computer files and programs involved, and then submitting individual copies of the assignment as one's  own individual work.
  • When in doubt about rules concerning plagiarism, students are urged to consult with individual facultymembers, academic departments, or recognized handbooks in their field.
  • Fabrication is the use of invented information or the falsification of research or other findings. Fabrication includes but is not limited to the following examples:
    • Citation of information not taken from the source indicated. This may include the incorrect documentation of secondary source materials.
    • Listing sources in bibliographies that are not directly used in the academic exercise.
    • Submission in a paper, lab report or other academic exercise of falsified, invented,
or fictitious data or evidence, or deliberate and knowing concealment or distortion of the true nature, origin or function of such data or evidence.
    • Submitting, as your own, any academic exercises prepared totally or partially by another.
  • Cheating is an act or an attempted act of deception by which a student    seeks to misrepresent that s/he has mastered information on an academic    exercise that s/he has not mastered.
Cheating includes but is not limited to the following examples:

    • Copying from another student's test paper.
    • Allowing another student to copy from a test paper.
    • Unauthorized use of module textbook or other material such as a notebook  to complete a test or other assignment.
    • Collaborating on a test, quiz or other project with any other person(s) without authorization.
    • Using or possessing specifically prepared materials during a test, e.g., notes, formula lists, notes written on the student's clothing, that are not authorized.
    • Using electronic instruments, such as cell phones, pagers, etc., to share  information, when prohibited.
    • Taking a test for someone else or permitting someone else to take a test for you.
    • Academic misconduct includes other academically dishonest acts such as tampering with grades or taking part in obtaining
or distributing any part of an un-administered test.
